1971 was the last year in which Mercedes launched large convertibles with 4 seats in the form of the W111. Since then, styles first prevailed when it came to this type of open vehicle. Although the R107 SL with its optional rear emergency seats was a small solution, it could not really alleviate the pain of loss felt by convertible enthusiasts. Later, the topic of open-top four-seaters with a star was revived. It was not until the end of the 1980s that Mercedes strategists toyed with the idea of offering a competitor to the open-top BMW three-seater. Thus W-201 convertible prototypes were created, but the project did not get beyond an experimental stage because the open-top baby Benz would hardly have been ready for series production before 1990. A short convertible life cycle until it was replaced by the W202 in 1993 would not have been able to recoup the high development costs. Mercedes adopted many of the A 201's solutions for the W124 Cabrio. The fabric-covered four-seater was based on a heavily revised W124 Coupé. More than 1000 parts were adapted or newly developed to transform the Coupe into a topless model.
Of the approximately 34,000 convertibles ever built, just under 15,000 were destined for export. The R129 SL was offered in parallel and over 200,000 left the production line. By comparison, a W124 convertible is a rare sight. In addition, only about 8000 vehicles of the E220 version were ordered. Except for the boot lid, this E220 has its original paintwork and changed hands only once in 2003. Now the car is looking for a new owner. In addition to the blue soft top, there is a hardtop in body colour incl. suspension for the garage ceiling. All invoices, old TÜV reports and documents perfectly document the history of the vehicle and also the regularly registered maintenance work leaves no questions unanswered.
In spite of the Sportline equipment, the convertible remains a great glider that covers long distances effortlessly while pampering the passengers with quietness and smoothness. Sportiness therefore remains more of a footnote. Come by and see for yourself the very well-maintained condition of this W124 convertible.
